Premium tea tipples are replacing mega-pricy wines for top-table wheelers and dealers in some of London’s swankiest and most expensive restaurants.
The capital’s banking and City movers and shakers have been forced to change their boozy ways by new office edicts banning drinking at lunchtime.
So the canny connivers have switched to exotic teas, including some of Sri Lanka’s own superfine varieties, for which they are paying up to £18—that’s nearly SLR4,000—a glass!
Mail Online reports: “Premium tea is replacing wine as the tipple of choice for businessmen as long boozy lunches become a thing of the past.
“Hotels and restaurants that once relied on customers entertaining clients with a bottle or two of Rioja have been forced to turn to alcohol-free alternatives to satisfy their increasingly sober clientele and stay in profit.”
The top Michelin-starred French restaurant in the City, Club Gascon (pictured below top), recently introduced a menu of £15 for three teas to go with a five-course meal as an alternative to its deal of £20 for three wines.
Claridge’s (pictured below bottom) in Mayfair has added four teas to its menu, which cost up to £18 a glass and are paired with food.
