NEWS.LK reports from Australia that “the Canberra community came in large numbers to savour a bit of Sri Lanka at the Sri Lanka Festival”, where vibrant multiculture was the order of the day.

“High Commissioner Somasundaram Skandakumar in his welcome address appreciated the participation and contribution of all Sri Lankan communities in Canberra which made the event truly Sri Lankan and depicted the diversity of Sri Lankan society.

First Assistant Secretary Klugman, who is a former High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, briefly outlined the history of the relationship between the two countries while the High Commissioner mentioned some of the activities being planned in 2017 to commemorate 70 years of friendship.

Over 3000 people representing the Commonwealth and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) governments, diplomatic corps, and the local community visited the Festival and enjoyed Sri Lankan food, culture and crafts of Sri Lanka.

Australian Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs Senator Zed Seselja was the Chief Guest. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Asanga Gurusinghe travelled all the way from Melbourne to be present at the Festival.

Special Milestone

Meanwhile, Ceylon Today reports that “2017 marks a special milestone in Australia and Sri Lanka’s long shared history—70 years of diplomatic relations.

“Australia and Sri Lanka share individual and institutional connections that span almost every part of our societies. A large and vibrant Sri Lankan-origin community—drawn from all ethnicities—significantly enriches Australia’s multicultural life.”

Said Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Bryce Hutchesson: “This 70th Anniversary gives us the chance to reflect on the rich history between our countries. The celebrations will draw us closer and remind us of our many shared values and interests.

“It is a time of hope and opportunity for Sri Lanka, and for developing further ties between us. There is much Australia and Sri Lanka can do together to realize the potential of our relationship.”
