When the owl and the pussycat put to sea they found their dream beach location in Sri Lanka!
When the owl and pussycat put to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat they surely didn’t expect to make a landfall on Sri Lanka’s idyllic south coast.
But they would undoubtedly have loved their namesake boutique hotel, which is nestled right on the beach a short tuk-tuk ride from Unawatuna and historic Galle Fort.
As London’s Evening Standard says, The Owl And The Pussycat “is best for stylish relaxation with a bohemian beat, within easy reach of Sri Lanka’s southern hotspots, but at arm’s reach from too many tourists”.
“Edward Lear’s famous poem inspires the whimsical design of this boutique hotel… Set right on the sea where fishermen work through the day, you may well be able to spot a pea green boat, as well.
It notes that the quiet and untouristy Wijaya and Dalawella beaches are a short walk away, “while lively Unawatuna beach – complete with restaurants and nightlife – is a 10 minute tuk tuk away”.
Writer Ben Norum was particularly impressed with the cuisine: “Sri Lankan food is an exhilarating pleasure, and the upscale but authentic dishes served at the hotel’s lovely outdoor restaurant far surpass most of what you find by the beach.”
Meanwhile, “the hotel’s chic, bohemian design is almost as sunny as the weather. It pulls together bright Sri Lankan fabrics, quirky sculptures and breezy art – some of it owl and pussycat themed.
“The hotel is much more about working off the stresses of normal life than it is about working out, which is probably why its small gym is little used while its gorgeous bright blue-tiled outdoor pool and massage hut set in the grounds are much more popular.
“Staff are friendly and helpful enough to easily count as unofficial concierge, while laundry and room service are available, along with free wifi throughout.”
