Booming tourism on scenic isle

Arab News: Sri Lanka is among this year’s biggest tourism destinations — with the island attracting an increasing number of visitors.

The island attracted 2,058,000 tourists in 2016, an increase of 14 percent compared with the previous year, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). Tourism Minister John Amaratunga said the number was the highest ever.

While it promises well for the industry, the numbers were far below that of competing destinations like Thailand and Malaysia, which draw 25-30 million tourists annually, the minister said.

Sri Lanka to host shopping festival to lure tourists

Travel and Tour: Sri Lanka has been planning to host a mega shopping festival that would be strikingly similar to the famous ‘Dubai Shopping Festival’, with an aim to draw an increased number of tourists to this part of the world, as per an official statement.

The Sri Lanka Retailers’ Association (SLRA) had held a meeting with Ravi Karunanayake, who is the minister of finance, recently in order to discuss the proposed plan.

This fair would target the local as well as foreign shoppers. Different choices and attractive discounts would be offered to visitors. Apart from that, the event would also witness various sports and cultural programs, musical events and also book exhibitions.

The country is endorsed by many global media brands as one of the best destinations to visit this year. Travel destinations in Sri Lanka provide an array of holiday experiences from sun-kissed beach holidays to a marathon of wildlife watching, adrenaline pumping adventure sports, and pilgrimages to some of the oldest cities in the world.

Around 13 per cent of Sri Lanka is conserved as national parks, reserves, sanctuaries and jungle corridors.
