Colombo to stage musical extravaganza with spectacular 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games
Choral music lovers will throng to Colombo in October when Sri Lanka’s capital city hosts the spectacular 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games, a feast of music and gala celebrations organized by INTERKULTUR of Germany.
Thousands of international participants, chaperons and spectators will boost cultural tourism in citywide events organised by the Colombo Cultural Hub Trust and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.
Fostering and developing indigenous art and culture
The week-long festival, from October 21–28, of choral competitions, friendship concerts and gala concerts will take place at three venues—the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Lionel Wendt Theatre, and Temple Trees, the official residence of Sri Lanka’s prime minister.
The Island newspaper reports that The Colombo Cultural Hub Trust aims to foster visual and performing arts, both international and local, with the objectives of:
- Fostering and developing indigenous art and culture.
- Promoting international art and culture amongst the people of Sri Lanka.
- Nurturing local artists pursuing both local and international art and culture.
- Internationally promoting and showcasing Colombo as the Cultural Hub of South Asia.
‘This magnificent festival will provide a platform for multi-cultural exchange’
Says trust chairman Mano Chanmugam: “This week-long competitive celebration will be held in a South Asian nation for the very first time, and we at the Colombo Cultural Hub Trust are delighted to partner with Interkultur to bring it to Colombo.
“We are confident that this magnificent festival will not only be a center of entertainment and competitions, but provide a platform for multi-cultural exchange, especially for our youth.”
The highlight of the festival will take place on Tuesday, 24th October, when 70 choirs from 10 nations comprising 3,000 choristers will parade from the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, around the Viharamahadevi Park and back.
Thousands of participants from a host of competing nations will perform
Says INTERKULTUR: “Thousands of participants from a host of competing nations will perform in a variety of venues, turning Colombo into a hub for Asia-Pacific choral music.
“The invitation to this unique event goes not only to choirs from the Asia-Pacific region, but also to ensembles from all around the globe, all of whom will surely find a platform to participate.”
