The Kalpitiya peninsula on the western side of Sri Lanka’s spectacular Puttalam Lagoon is thriving as a tropical eco-tourism and watersports destination for holidaymakers around the world.
Just a two-hour drive from the airport, and three hours from the capital Colombo, it is also a good jumping-off point for some of Sri Lanka’s outstanding wildlife reserves, the Hill Country and Cultural Triangle.
One beach-side hotel that has got the high-end rustic-charm vibe just right is the Bar Reef resort, with its emphasis on total chill-out mixed with interesting things to do when not, er, totally chilling out.
Accommodation features garden and beach cabanas and villas in private enclosures with open-air bathrooms, which really do help guests take ‘communing with nature’ to a new level.
And as they say: “The gentle rustling of the palm fronds amid soft golden rays together with the feel of the ocean sand beneath your feet will awaken your mind to a feeling of blissful relaxation…”
There’s more: “A 40m infinity pool set in close proximity to the ocean is the epitome of relaxation. Feel yourself unwind as you float about the invigorating waters, enjoying the breathtaking view of the Indian Ocean, its gentle waves lapping the golden shore in a slow dance as the rays of sun reflect on the waters create a magical atmosphere.
“In the evenings you can lounge about on our sunbathing beds and enjoy the gentle breeze as you watch those breathtaking sunsets. An evening dip is almost irresistible when you see the pool light up with the thousands of fiber optic lights, seeming almost like a sky full of stars.”
