Backpacking website Arpeda is highlighting five top hiking trails in Sri Lanka for “people who want an escape to the countryside or those who want to experience some of the beautiful nature trails in the world”.
It says: “If you are an avid hiker then you should not miss out on Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a popular destination for those who are looking for the best hiking or trekking trails.”
Ella Rock tops the list, “a beautiful small backpacker hub on the southern edge of Sri Lanka’s hill country and situated in the middle of the beautiful countryside with small vegetable plots in the valleys and forests on the tops”.
“This is wonderful scenery once you reach the top of the rock and many surprises on the way starting from the agriculture fields and tea plantations.”
Second up is nearby Lipton’s Seat, “one of the attractive observation points of Sri Lanka. It is located on the top of the Poonagala hill near the tea factory. To reach the place you have to climb about 7km through the tea plantation”.
Perhaps the best known among Sri Lanka’s increasing number of adventure tourists is Adam’s Peak, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites and a magnet for anyone seeking a spiritual experience.
Meanwhile, Horton Plains, “one of the top destinations for bird watchers” and a haven for wildlife, is a magnet for anyone who wants to connect with nature and the natural environment.
