Undiscovered Guide spotlights Mirissa, the renowned Sri Lanka beach resort
A relatively quiet and undeveloped beach, with good sands. The waves can be quite large, making it good for surfing, however swimming can be dangerous
Undiscovered Guide says that “by day, the beach offers beautiful soft sand to relax on, with rustic restaurants separated in places by throngs of palm trees. Unlike Unawatuna, the restaurants remain rustic and unobtrusive on the beach”.
By night, as the sun goes down, an unorganised crisscrossing of fairy lights and candles comes up. It can be hard to tell where one restaurant starts and the next begins.
Each offering seafood to the sound of waves crashing in the darkness a few feet away, Mirissa is perfectly low-key, with the odd live music and disco bar.
Currently, the small town straddles the line between lively nightlife and relaxed nonchalance quite nicely.
